A Balancing Act: part 2

Last week I wrote about the importance of a healthy work-life balance. This week I have some tips for you getting a better balance in your life.

So, what can we do to get more fun into our lives?

1: Schedule time for fun!
Schedule of work

Schedule time into your diary to have fun! Seems silly but you know those times are blocked out for you to do whatever it is you want. Be sure not to cancel those and fill in with client appointments. If your client wants to work with you, they will find another time suitable to you and them.

2: Actually have fun!
When you schedule in your fun time, make sure you actually do something you enjoy. Unless you really love cleaning the house and doing laundry, that isn’t to be done in your fun time!

3: Technology detox.
A lot of us love our technology but it can be hard to stop working if you are getting work-related emails or texts and feel you need to respond immediately.  Take some time out from technology, even if it is just 30 minutes, and do something else, like go for a walk without your phone. A 30 minute walk in the park can make such a difference to your wellbeing and is a brilliant way to detox from technology. Believe me, your clients or boss won’t hate you if you don’t respond immediately.

4: Say no!
This might sound mean but we all have people in our lives who expect us to help or do things for them whenever they need. Sometimes you just have to say no. It is exhausting always helping others, sometimes you need a break to do something for yourself. If those people don’t like you saying no, then maybe they aren’t the best people to be around. Don’t feel guilty taking time out for yourself, it’s your wellbeing after all.

5: Limit time wasting!

We’ve all done this. Have an important piece of work to do, but decide instead to check your emails or go on Facebook or take a selfie or check the cat video someone sent you? Procrastination means we don’t get the work we need to do done. Instead, we spend hours trying to get it done when in fact if we had just stopped other time wasting activities and just done it, it would have been finished hours ago and we can get on with other stuff. This is a way our work life can overspill into our non-work life.

These are just some of the things that you can do to create a better work-life balance. Start small and grow from there, because you will find that better balance will make a big difference to your life. Enjoy your life, don’t let it be just about work.
